Bernard's interest in aviation began at age 14 with a family vacation to Florida in 1963. Upon landing in Miami, Bernard told his father "I want to become a pilot". Flying lessons at Teterboro,NJ and occasional CAP orientation flights followed the next few years.

Bernard attended Daniel Webster College 1982-1986 graduating with a degree in Aviation Management/Flight Operations. Bernard started a career with the FAA in 1985 at Boston Center as an air traffic assistant; a year later became a specialist at Bangor AFSS in Maine.

Bernard relocated to Islip NY AFSS in 1988, obtaining the CFI rating in 2002 at Mid Island, then a CFII through SUNY, Farmindale. Bernard's next step is continuing at MIAS with the multi-CFII rating. Bernard also has experience as a commercial pilot ground school instructor at SUNY.
