Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship
Ever since I was a small child I have been infatuated with aviation and have wanted to learn how to fly airplanes. When I was sixteen years old, I enrolled in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Aviation program at Brookhaven Airport. Prior to that time, I had only abstract dreams and longings. Now I know that aviation is not just a dream, but a lifelong pursuit that will return as much joy as the amount of hard work put into it.
Despite the many sacrifices I have made during my training, I have enjoyed every minute of it and will have accomplished my goal of becoming a pilot by the time I graduate from high school. I am planning to earn a college degree in journalism so that I can use my writing skills to bring my love of aviation to broader audiences.
However, after seeing a look of pure joy on the face of another young person after their first flight, I have been inspired to become a flight instructor. With effort and determination (and the Louis Mancuso. Sr., Scholarship!) I will have the chance to train other young people how to do what I love most, so they can experience the same feelings of happiness and exhilaration I get when I pull back the yoke and feel the ground fall away from beneath my feet.
