Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship

Most little girls like sitting happily on a swing, but my thrill was to dangle my body over the edge of the plastic seat, stretch out my arms and legs, and pretend I was flying.  What I hadn’t realized was how that simple act of motion would come to mean so much.

I currently volunteer as a cadet member of the Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol. I am able to lead a group of cadets to protect, embrace tradition, respect authority, to share with others and accept differences. Through Civil Air Patrol, at age 17, I attended the 2014 New York Wing Leadership Encampment. During this experience, I was one of the few girls welcomed into the cockpit of the LC-130 ‘Skibird’, one of the greatest transport aircrafts in history. Observing the professional pilots perform the real act of flight was unbelievable.  I realized that my everyday office could be the cockpit. Clearly, I feel capable and happy sitting here.

This experience allowed me to focus on mapping out my next goal. I am determined to share my enthusiasm and inspire future female aviators. I am currently a high school senior and plan on graduating with honors in June 2015. I will be attending Farmingdale State College beginning in the Summer 2015 semester to start my private pilot ground training. I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Science.  My career ambition is to earn a professional pilot’s license and gain expertise in various aspects of aviation management. I would love the opportunity to receive the Louis Mancuso, Sr. Scholarship to help me achieve my goals.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
