Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship

For as long as I can remember, I would look up into the sky and wonder what it would be like to be up there.  On my sixteenth birthday, I finally found out. My dad bought me an introductory flight lesson and just two days after my birthday, on May twenty fifth, I went up in N2119E for a ride I would never forget.  I remember the feeling of those now familiar chills running up and down my spine.  At that point, I knew that aviation was what I wanted to do with my life.

I enrolled in the Suffolk Aviation Academy the following fall.  It was one of the best choices I ever made.  It solidified my interest in aviation and turned it into a passion.  I know my education at the Academy is something many other students don’t have the opportunity to experience, and I am very grateful for the lessons I have learned there.  The Academy challenged me in a way that regular high school could not.  It taught me how to be responsible, to be a leader, both in the class and in the air, and apply real life applications of math and science.

It was because of Suffolk Aviation Academy that I grew interested in Air Traffic Control.  The Academy took all the students on a tour of New York Center.  From the second I walked into the control room, I knew I belonged.  Watching how the staff worked and seeing the different technology they were using made me want to learn more.  The chills I had on my first flight were nothing compared to this.  It was then I decided that air traffic control was for me.  I know I will work hard and be dedicated in my studies to make my dream a reality.
