Aviation Scholarship 2009 recipient
John Runco
Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship
I first became aware of the U.S. Air Force five years ago and have longed to serve ever since.
The mission of protecting the U.S. overseas is appealing, exciting, and potentially rewarding.
The operations of supersonic aircraft fascinate me. I am looking forward to becoming a pilot after having earned an Aeronautical Engineering degree.
My uncle, Mario Runco, sparked my interest in aviation. As a NASA Astronaut, he has intrigued me with his stories of space travel. I recently visited the United States Air Force Academy.
While there, I learned about various aircraft and was captivated by the sight of soaring gliders. Last summer, I visited Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where I flew with a pilot/student. It was an amazing experience. Ever since, I have been sure aviation is what I would like to pursue.
At Chaminade High School, I have been a well-rounded student athlete and Eagle Scout. I was recently named Chaminade's 2009 Outstanding Physical Education Student of the Year. I have already been a mentor for younger scouts and Varsity Swimming teammates. With a career in aviation, I shall take pleasure in helping younger individuals who are interested in pursuing the wonders of flight.
I shall be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a member of AFROTC. My long term goal of becoming an Air Force Officer can begin if have the funds necessary to pursue my goal. If awarded this scholarship,
it would help provide the finances necessary for my college education and career as a United States Air
Force pilot.
Thank you.
