Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship

Over the past two years, I have set many academic and career goals which are shaping who I am today. My name is Kenneth Kiriluk, I am 17 years old and I am currently a senior at Ward Melville High School. I have been pursuing my private pilot certificate through the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Aviation Academy. I have been accepted to Arizona State University, Florida Institute of Technology and Farmingdale State College. I plan to continue my pilot ratings through one of these degree programs.

In my junior year of high school, my interest in flying led me to enroll in the Suffolk Aviation Academy program. This technical program allows students to obtain their private pilot certificate by completing one year of ground school and one year of flight school. Throughout the first year, I was able to complete the FAA private pilot knowledge exam at the Mid Island Air Service facility and presently, I have +35 flight hours. In early November, I received my solo endorsement from my instructor and was able to solo an aircraft. I am currently completing the stage two check in order to complete my solo cross-country flights. I plan on obtaining my Private Pilot Certificate before the end of May 2014.

In early 2013, I was fortunate enough spend a day "shadowing" the line crew and mechanics at Mid Island Air Service, located at Brookhaven Airport. After this positive experience, I decided it would be a great opportunity for me to network and I got a job at Mid Island Air Service. I applied and got a position as line crew for the summer at Mid Island Air Service at Mac Arthur Airport. My brief career working for Mid Island Air Service was one of the greatest experiences that I have ever had. Even if I was just mopping the hanger, I did it with a smile because I felt so lucky just to be around fellow pilots, aircraft, and the airport, in general. I am looking forward to working for Mid Island Air Service again this Summer after graduation.
