Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship

Ever since I was a child, I have always been intrigued by aviation, but I didn't quite know why. I loved playing with my toy airplanes and imagining myself in the cockpit, gliding through the air. One day, I discovered why I was so fascinated by aviation. It turned out that my uncle, grandmother, and great-grandmother were well accomplished pilots. I knew from then on, I was destined to become a pilot.

When I first enrolled at Mid Island Flight School, I was overwhelmed and enthralled by the overall atmosphere. I was anxious about my new challenge I was about to tackle. During my training, I hit a brick wall, hard. I was confused, perplexed, and frustrated. Everything in my life used to come easy to me until now. Math and science were no problem but, aviation was a new type of subject. Aviation was a brick wall that showed me how difficult this was going to be to accomplish, and I was determined to do it.

This challenge changed who I was. I realized that not everything in my life was going to come easy, and that I had to have different ways to approach different challenges. Just like brick walls, which all different sizes and thicknesses, I have to use a different strategy every time to overcome them. Like Randy Pausch once said, "The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something…" .

I want to pursue a career in aviation not just because I love to fly, but because it defines who I am. I am someone who is not afraid of new challenges, and someone who isn't afraid of being knocked down. I am Matthew LoRusso, future pilot.
