Essay for the Louis Mancuso, Sr., Scholarship
I became fascinated with flight at the age of twelve. I was on my first plane ride. My family and I were headed to Florida for a family vacation. The memories of that experience have stayed with me and have remained strong. It was a life defining moment! From then on, I have wanted to become an airline pilot.
Everything about flying interests me: the feeling of the plane speeding down the runway, the roar and vibrations of the engines and finally taking flight. I could not wait to be in eleventh grade when I would be eligible to attend Wilson Tech for the Aviation Science/ Flight program. Since last year, this class has been the highlight of my high school education. I spend the first half of the school day at Deer Park High School and then finish out the day at the Republic Airport Tech campus. I completed the ground school portion of the private pilot license and have actually gotten flight time during my school day. Tech prepared me and I passed the FAA written exam. On weekends I currently fly with Nassau Flyers at Republic Airport. I have logged a little over 28 hours and I am going to solo soon.
Next year I will be attending the Florida Institute of Technology for Aviation Management with Flight. I love the idea of being in New York, hopping on a plane and, in a few short hours, arriving in Florida. I look forward to traveling and experiencing different people/cultures. It’s a wonderful feeling to know what you want to do with your life and I feel confident that the life of an airline pilot will be for me.
Thank you for your consideration.
