Memos to Pilots

We will, on occasion, place a memo in this section when we wish to advise all of our renters and students of a policy change or “need to know information”.  Please check this section to keep up to date.

FAA Extends First, Third Class Medicals - Medical expiration dates extended.

Air Traffic Control Light Signals – Loose your radio on the ground or in the air;
learn the proper light signals

Scratched Windshields – a scratched windshield can obscure your vision and make it difficult to spot traffic.

Rental Information – Hobbs discrepancies, billing errors, landing fees, aircraft squawks.

Angel Flights – feel good about helping someone and getting to fly at the same time.

Worn Tires – see what damage can be done by riding the brakes.

Montauk Airport – displaced threshold.

Cancellation Fees – be considerate of other pilots and save on fees.

172R’s Wt & Bal – lots of fuel capacity, but remember it reduces your payload.

FAA Extends First, Third Class Medicals

Pilots under age 40 can save a trip to the AME. On July 24, 2008 the FAA will extend the duration of third class medicals from 36 calendar months to 60 calendar months (five years) and first class medicals from six calendar months to 12 calendar months for pilots under age 40.

“This is welcome news for the GA industry,” said AOPA President Phil Boyer. “AOPA supported the FAA’s move that makes it easier and more affordable for younger pilots to fly.”

Current and expired medical certificates are grandfathered under this rule.

For example, a pilot under age 40 who has a third class medical that would have expired at the end of July 2008 under the three-year limit is now good for another two years. In other words, the medical won’t expire until the last day of July 2010.

But what if you had let your medical expire? If you are under age 40, and the certificate was issued less than five years ago, it is now valid until the last day of the month, five years from its original issuance date.

Here’s how it works. Let’s say you got your third class medical on Sept. 20, 2004, (and you were under the age of 40 at that time) but have not renewed it. Under the current rules, you haven’t had a medical since Sept. 30, 2007, and could not act as pilot in command. Now your medical is valid again and will remain valid until Sept. 30, 2009. Welcome back to the skies!

Pilots under 40 who have first class medicals won’t need to renew theirs for one year after the original date of issuance. After one year, it will revert to a third class medical.

So, what if you turn 40 during this new one- or five-year window? That won’t impact the duration of your medical. If you get your first or third class medical the day before you turn 40, it will still be valid for one year or five years, respectively.

Because medical certificates that have already been issued and those being issued within the next month won’t reflect the new regulatory language, pilots should print this card that shows the new duration rules and carry it with their medical at all times. The FAA does not intend to reissue certificates to airmen who applied before the new certificates become available.

AOPA’s medical certification staff handles about 20,000 pilot medical inquiries each year. To address members’ medical concerns, AOPA periodically meets in person with the FAA’s Aerospace Medical Certification staff in Oklahoma City, Okla., and the federal air surgeon in Washington, D.C. Because of this relationship, AOPA and the FAA have been able to advance and streamline the medical certification process for pilots.

Scratched Windshields

Attention Students, Renters and Aircraft Owners:
We have noticed the windshields of many of our planes are getting deeply scratched on the inside. This is caused from having clipboards, kneeboards, headsets, etc. placed up on top of the glare shield. We ask that you refrain from placing anything on the glare shield that could scratch the windshield.  We will be replacing windshields in some of the rental aircraft at a substantial cost. We appreciate your consideration.  Thank you.

Rental Information

To:       All Dispatchers, CFI’s, Students and Renter Pilots
Subj:    Aircraft Rental Information

In order to insure proper billing, please verify the start hobbs time when you are preflighting the aircraft.  If there is any discrepancy in this time, even by .1, please notify dispatch PRIOR to the flight for an adjustment.  NO adjustments will be made after the flight.  If the hobbs begins to move to the next number, please record the higher number.  If on one flight you end at 8 ½ and have to record .9 as the stop time, you’ll make it up next time you fly and get to record .4 as the start when it is actually 3 ½!  Our linemen record the hobbs time each night and if there is a discrepancy from one day to the next, that is the number we will use.

At the end of each month, all clipboard cards are audited for accuracy as we find many subtraction errors.  If you are overbilled, your account will be credited or a gift certificate will be issued.  If you are underbilled, your account or credit card will be billed.  We will always send backup documentation.

Whenever you make a landing at another airport besides ISP or HWV, please list the airport on the right side of the clipboard card.  This will make is easier for us to properly bill out any landing fees incurred on your flight.  These fees will automatically be charged to your credit card and a receipt mailed to you.  There is a $2.50 per landing, fee at Republic Airport as well as many local airports on Long Island and CT.  There is also a landing fee at HWV if not based there.

If there is a squawk on the aircraft, please advise dispatch as we would like the opportunity to have a mechanic or CFI come out to the aircraft to verify.  There have been many grounded aircraft due to radio squawks, only to find out that the pilot had the audio panel set up improperly.  This is an easy oversight, especially if you are flying multiply aircraft with different equipment. If this is the case, we will be able to salvage your flight and not disappoint you.

We are asking all customers to complete a new rental agreement.  As a reminder to all, our policy of 3000’ minimum, paved runways (4000’ if temps are over 90 degrees) has not changed.  I recently found out that two pilots who had signed rental agreements on file, landed at Mount Snow and Block Island.  The reason I point this out is that we increased our hull deductible from $500 per incident to $10,000 due to increased insurance costs.  Our hourly flight insurance charge is $2.50.  This $2.50 per flight hour provides you with $500,000 liability protection AND zero deductible on the hull on the 172R’s .  Liability on all other aircraft is limited to $100,000.  This protection is in place provided our students and renters are in compliance with all FAA, Town and MIAS rules.  Therefore, if you fly into a short field and slide off the end of the runway, you may be responsible for the damage done to the aircraft up to the $10,000 deductible.  ANY authorized exceptions to the rental agreement must be in writing and signed by a manager.

Angel Flights

Are you looking for a reason to fly?
A chance to feel GREAT about yourself?
A way to save money on your flight?

How about getting involved with ANGEL FLIGHT.

Angel Flight is an organization that provides free transportation to patients and families of patients as they receive medical care.  Often a patient, very often a child, must be flown to another state for medical procedures.

Angel Flight pairs patients with pilots willing to donate their time and flight expenses.  What better reason to fly knowing you will be helping someone in need.

To find out more about this great organization, pilot requirements and insurance responsibilities, visit their website at www.angelflightne.org, or call 1-800 549-9980.

Mid Island will give our renter pilots a 20% discount on their aircraft rental for an angel flight.  If you own your own plane, we will give you a $.50/gallon fuel discount for this flight.

Worn Tires

Attention Pilots:

Please insure that your heels are on the floor and brakes free on landing.
We have been changing an excessive amount of tires lately.

Please check tires carefully for flat spots.  Roll tires ¼ turn so you can check the “bottom”.  If any excessive wear or flat spots are noticed, please report them to dispatch PRIOR to your flight.

Thank you.

Montauk Airport (MTP)

The threshold at Montauk Airport has been displaced as follows:

Runway 24
Was 3258’, displaced 442’….now 2816
(over the dunes)

Runway 6
Was 3258’, displaced 230’….now 3028
(over power lines)

Remember that Mid Island’s policy is 3000’ paved runways.
Please do not flight plan to Montauk if prevailing winds favor a landing on runway 24.

Cancellation Fees

No Show/Cancellation Policy:

We all have missed a scheduled appointment; sometimes we just forget, sometimes something comes up last minute.  However, it is difficult to run a flight schedule and try to accommodate all of our students and renters if we have last minute cancellations and/or no shows.  If it is an emergency, or your first time, you will not be charged, however, in order to compensate our flight instructors for time lost, our policy follows:

To our students and renters:

Our no show/late cancellation fee is $60.00 per block for a scheduled dual lesson.

Students and renters will also be charged a cancellation fee for the aircraft. For a single block, the fee is 1/2 of the hourly dry rental rate. For a double block, you will be charged one hour dry rate for a no show or late cancellation. Our computerized scheduling program, Flight Schedule Pro, sends out an email rental reminder 24 hours in advance, but we still have some last minute cancellations. This leaves the instructor without a student and blocks another student or renter from being able to schedule the aircraft at their desired time. For rental purposes, it prevents another renter from being able to schedule that aircraft. If the lesson/rental is on our schedule, and you do not show up, it will be considered a no-show, so please contact us if there is any doubt regarding scheduled flight times. All lessons scheduled will take place, rain or shine. Your flight lesson will take place on the ground, in the simulator or in the aircraft.

Our cancellation/no show policy is as follows: if a lesson is not cancelled 24 hours in advance, or you fail to show for your scheduled lesson, your account or credit card will be billed $60.00 so the instructor can be compensated for his/her time. For students and renters: you will be charged 50% of the dry rate for a single block rental and 100% of the dry rental rate for a double block. We do have voice mail so if you need to advise us of a morning flight cancellation, you may leave a message and we will get back to you to reschedule. We are open at 0700 and a dispatcher will be available at that time.

172R’s Weight & Balance

We want to caution every pilot who flies the R model (and SP) Skyhawks, especially those who learned in an older 172, that with more than two people on board, you could have a weight and balance issue.

Please check your weights carefully and advise dispatch at the time of scheduling if you suspect that fuel weight may be a factor.  Aircraft are routinely topped at night.  We need to know a few days ahead if we have to keep the fuel low on a particular aircraft for your flight – all planes do not fly every day, so if you let us know on Tuesday that you need half tanks for a Wednesday flight, the plane may have been topped on Sunday and not flown since then.

We have a weight and balance program loaded into the computer in the pilot lounge for all of our rental aircraft.  Please feel free to do your computations there.  The following is for your information only – a complete weight and balance should be done prior to any flight where payload may become a safety consideration.

Plane Basic Empty Weight Usable Fuel (lbs) Max Ramp Weight Max Payload
N2119E 1697 318 2457 442
N227BZ 1741 318 2558 499
N2438S 1650 318 2457 489
N3544G 1680 318 2457 459
N9767F 1639  318 2457 500

Defueling is a very timely process, one we wish to avoid if possible, so please plan ahead.
There will be a charge to the renter if an aircraft requires defueling.
