I went along on the training flights. Jason Bang (the instructor assigned to Valerie) and I discussed this unusual demand and decided that, if it made her more comfortable, we should do it her way. I promised Jason that I would keep my mouth shut (not easy for me - but this was for a good cause). As I sat in the back during the first flight I remember wondering how Jason was going to teach my wife to land the plane in a few lessons when it took me so long to get it right. It was interesting to watch how it was done. Jason was great with Valerie as she struggled with her fear of the controls. Gradually she became more relaxed as Jason focused her on only the most critical tasks. At the end of each lesson we went to lunch nearby and Valerie would tell me how much fun she had flying the plane. On the last day when she landed the plane several times on her own at two different airports, she did not have to tell me how much fun she had. I recognized it from my days in flight training and how much fun I had at that time.

The big surprise came at lunch that last day. Aside from all of her excitement from doing a “real squeaker” (as she put it), all Valerie wanted to talk about was when we were going to go flying next and where we were going to go! That’s when I realized that the “Right Seat Companion” class had not only met all of my objectives, but it also had transformed my wife from a nervous (but willing) participant into an enthusiastic flying partner. And it happened in only a few days. This is something I had been working on for months and had gradually given up all hope for.

Since taking the “Right Seat Companion” class at Mid Island Valerie is not only more comfortable flying with me, she is actually a big help to me in the cockpit. And the flights are a lot more fun - for both of us!

RIGHT SEAT COMPANION

PART 1 of 2: This 5 hour course [3 hours of flight, 2 hours of ground] is intended to help the non-pilot right seat companion understand enough about flying to be able to assist and gain emergency coping skills. Price for the course is $125 + plane and fuel expenses, includes CFI, Your First Hours Video or DVD, and Aopa Training Manual.

Session 1 - about the airplane

the control surfaces and instruments, taxing, basics of straight and level flight, turns, climbs and descents, speed control, and slow flying.

Session 2 - flying the airplane & getting help

holding altitude, finding an airport, flying a pattern, radio communications, emergency frequencies.

Session 3 - getting on the ground

putting it all together, and finally getting it on the ground.

PART 2 of 2: This 2 hour ground course is a follow up to the first part, an intro to the rudimentary basics of flying, and is intended to expand the non-pilot right seat companion’s knowledge of sectional charts, frequencies and use of the radios to be able to assist and participate in flights as more of a crew member, rather than just a passenger. This combined course will help you to FLY SAFER with this added knowledge of some of flying’s basics and show you how easy, safer and more enjoyable your flying adventure can be when you have the ability to assist and participate in flights. Price for the course is $50 + any plane and fuel expenses [if used].

Session 1 - about the sectional chart

Sectionals - What are they and what do they tell us? How do they differ from road maps? How to identify airports, landmarks, frequencies and navigation aids?

Session 2 - about the radios

Radio communications - How to use frequencies you found on the sectional. How to “dial-in” frequencies on the radio. What is a VOR and how are they used to navigate. What is a Transponder, how to “dial-in” codes and what are common codes.

This combined course will help you to FLY SAFER with this added knowledge of some of flying’s basics and show you how easy, safer and more enjoyable your flying adventure can be when you have the ability to assist and participate in flights.

NOTE: Upon completion, your flight instruction can be credited toward obtaining a pilot certificate, if you so chose. If you did enroll in our CBI VFR course, you will receive a $100 discount off the enrollment fee.
