THERE AND BACK IN ONE DAY...

For those of you with the rah, rah spirit and undergraduate yearnings, the perfect tonic for your collegiate soul might well be a jaunt to State College, Pennsylvania and University Park Field (UNV). Here you’ll find Penn State, home of Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions, a university that is an historic power house, both on the gridiron and in the classroom. Located in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, about two and half hours (C 172) west of ISP, Penn State is the most easterly of the Big Ten schools. The Big Ten actually consists of eleven universities (Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Penn) and arguably represents the American college experience at its best. With Penn State just a short hop away, this is your chance to experience one of our nation’s finest academic traditions.

The university is 4 miles from the field. It’s a huge, but attractive campus, so leave plenty of time for wandering the grounds. The admissions office runs daily tours, so if you have a teenager that’s starting to think college, make an appointment a day or two in advance and get an insider’s view of the campus.

Finally, before you leave, don’t forget to stop by the Student Union for some first rate tee shirts, sweats and caps. Although Penn State does have a great football tradition, the past two years haven’t been particularly kind to the old school. Come fall, toss on that sweatshirt you purchased and perhaps you’ll send some good karma to Coach Paterno and the Nittany Lions.

Enjoy the flight!

I LEARNED ABOUT DINING FROM THAT...

If you’re heading out to State College, you’re certainly going to get hungry - and you couldn’t be in a better place. Like all college towns, State College abounds in inexpensive eating options. You can eat at the on field restaurant if you like, but we suggest a walk down Main Street, scope out the scene, and if you’re still undecided, head for the Student Union (remember you’re going there to buy a sweatshirt anyway.) Given today’s finicky and health consciousness students, food in college unions is surprisingly good. Gone are the days of gray burgers and sheetrock pizza that pilots over 40 likely recall. From a light lunch to a multitude of courses, if you want choice, this is the place.

ARMCHAIR AVIATOR...

ALOFT, By Chang-ra Lee. 343 pp. New York: Riverhead Books. $24.95

Aloft is not really about flight, but it does have an element of flying and along with its Long Island setting might be a matter of interest to MIAS aviators. Many readers will recognize Lee as the author of NATIVE SPEAKER, a best selling work about the rise of a Korean greengrocer from the gritty streets of Queens to the more moneyed turf of Westchester. In ALOFT, he moves the setting to Long Island and shifts the ethnic focus to Italians in telling the story of Jerry Battle (formerly Battaglia) and his family.

The aviation key to the story is that Jerry is in the throes of a midlife crisis and, in order to escape the complications of family, marriage, and work flies his airplane aimlessly over the East End, the Sound, and the Ocean. In a way, Jerry resolves nothing, but in his time above our island escapes the “surly bonds of earth” and for a brief period finds a reflective moment.

This is a curious book and if you dash to your library to get a copy you’ll probably find a waiting list. Still, if you like a story that ponders what it’s all about – with an airplane in the background – then it’s worth the wait.
