Last year, while browsing the internet, one of those annoying pop-up advertising pages temporarily commandeered my screen. This one however took me by surprise. The title read; "be a pilot for $49.00." Ok so what's the catch? I thought. Well, further investigation led me to an information page which needed to be filled out. After that, a certificate was then mailed to my home address entitling me to a $49.00 introductory flight. A list of participating flight schools was also given. I chose Mid Island Air Service located at Long Island MacArthur Airport. I had heard of its good reputation and wanted something close by my home and office. A phone call and an appointment with the Flight Operations Manager, Jim Orehosky led to the actual flight. It was unbelievable, the CFI (certified flight instructor) actually passed me the controls over Port Jefferson harbor. That was November of last year. Today I am a private pilot with over 100 hours logged, and currently working on my instrument rating. That $49.00 changed my life. I now have the freedom to rent a plane and fly my family and friends anywhere around the Northeast. I have piloted day-trips to Atlantic city, Martha's Vineyard, and New Hampshire. The ski season is here and I have trips planned to Vermont and upstate New York. Thank you Mid Island for allowing me to fulfill my dreams. Rick Abrahall |
