Places to Visit

Syracuse (SYR), NY

A little less than two hours (C172) northwest of ISP, Syracuse (SYR) beckons in the lengthening days of Spring. While of course it may beckon in the winter as well, Syracuse's reputation as the snowiest city in America (128" annual average - more than Buffalo, Anchorage or Fairbanks) easily snuffs its allure. Situated on Onondaga Lake, SYR is an attractive city with a first class airport. Although lake effect squalls can occur until April - and should be considered in any flight plan - the warming weather makes this old industrial city worthy of a visit.

The prime attraction is the Carousel Mall. While Long Island has no shortage of good malls, the Carousel because of its innovative design, classic merry-go-round and upscale stores has turned gritty Syracuse into a shopping desintation.
Rental cars are available at the airport, but if you are just going to the mall jump in a cab. Its cheaper and assuming you're going on a weekend, you won't have to hassle for a parking space.
If you're an "Orangemen" fan, or you have a college bound high school senior, take a stroll around Syracuse Unversity which is attractively perched on a hill above the city.
