IMPORTANT: PILOT SHORTAGE IS A REAL PROBLEM!!!

A blue-chip organization of industry groups and businesses has collectively asked that the Government Accountability Office be directed to study what many regard as a serious looming pilot shortage. The group says a confluence of factors appears to be lining up that will make pilots in short supply.

A retirement bubble, which encompasses those who extended their careers thanks to a 2007 law that pushed the airline pilot retirement age to 65, has now run its course and retirement rates are expected to accelerate. At the same time, student pilot starts are dropping, the military is cutting back on the number of pilots it trains and a new law has mandated that the FAA require all Part 121 pilots to have an air transport pilot (ATP) certificate.

Now is the time to learn to fly. If we don’t encourage new student starts NOW, we are going to have serious shortages in the years to come..

The Mid Island family's main concern is to insure the safety and confidence of our students and pilots. We provide flight training from the Private Pilot through the Airline Transport Pilot.  We offer ground school courses to complement our flight instruction on LI. Once a year, our renters fly with our CFI’s for their Annual Flight Review where they can practice IFR approaches, gain Class B experience, plan a night cross country or work on any flight area of their choice. All renters fly under their own Personal Limitations Checklist which they can amend as their flight experience level increases.

Our NATA Safety 1st Linemen offer top notch aircraft detailing and fueling services.  Mid Island's aircraft maintenance shop maintains our school fleet to FAA standards as well as providing retail services which range from basic oil changes to engine installations.  We provide 100 hr, annual and aircraft pre-buy inspections as well as stock and sell a huge variety of Cessna and after market aircraft parts.

On the second Saturday of each month, our students and renters meet at ISP to participate in our free seminars where varied guest speakers discuss an array of interesting aviation topics.

My Trip to Oshkosh - 2009. By Louis Mancuso >>

Flying to Oshkosh is like a religious pilgrimage for me – a trip I feel compelled to make each year to renew my spirit at the altar of general aviation. I have flown to Oshkosh about 15 times. Usually, I fly my 1975 Piper Turbo Seneca II with its two new Continental engines, but this time I was asked by Tecnam to bring my 2009 LSA Eaglet to Oshkosh to display it in the Light Sport Aircraft mall at Whitman field.

Mid Island Flight School News

Alien Flight Training:

Mid Island Flight School has been approved for the training of foreign students. We have provided flight training for all ratings to students from many different countries around the world. If a student is not a U.S. citizen, there are certain steps which must be followed to insure that the proper government training authority is obtained prior to beginning flight training.

A foreign student must enter the U.S. with the proper immigration Visa; for flight training purposes, this would be an M1 Visa. You first must apply to study at a USCIS-approved school in the United States. Mid Island Flight School is a USCIS- approved school and can assist you with this Visa application by providing the necessary I-20M form which you will then present  to the US Embassy or Consulate in your country.  You should take the USCIS Form I-20 to the nearest U.S. consulate to obtain a student visa. You must also prove to the consulate that you have the financial resources required for your education and stay in the United States.   The Embassy or Consulate will be the governing body to issue the M1 Visa for travel and study in the U.S.
