completed in four days. There are penalties for not landing or over flying required airports, as well as finishing on time. There are prizes for the first ten winners, including a $5,000 top prize. Laura and I are new to this, so we'll be quite happy if we finish in the first half of the group. We're also most appreciative of Mid Island's sponsorship of this all women race. We're getting prepared, doing our homework and looking forward to a wonderful flying experience. Carol Froehlig -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AN AVIATION RITES DE PASSAGE Just after my sixteenth birthday, I made my first solo. While in a sense it was surely a rites de passage, an event that clearly marked my transition from a boyhood fascination with flying to student pilot, looked at another way it was an event that I had long since prepared for. I owe that preparation, as well as all the love I have for flying, to my grandfather, Lenny Mann. Since the age of six I was my grandfather's favorite copilot. My grandfather was a mentor and friend who not only nurtured my understanding of airmanship and avionics, but inspired me to fly right and seek the best possible training. As I write this, now at the cusp of life where all thoughts of aviation are dreams of the future, I look forward to a career of commercial flying. I hope to attend an aviation academy, get all my ratings then move on to the regionals and majors. I realize that much hard work lies ahead. Yet as I contemplate all the skills that must be mastered and the studies to be undertaken, I do so with confidence and thanks. Confidence in that I believe in myself, thanks for the wonderful grandfather that inspired it all. Eric Rubenstein |
IN MEMORIUM On March 14th, 2003, MIAS aviator Jim Davis' C 172 impacted a mountain in western North Carolina. The crash took the life of Jim, his wife Francie, and daughter Amanda. Amanda had just published a book, WONDER IF YOU'LL MISS ME . Jim was flying her around the Tar Heel state on a book signing tour. Jim was a physician and administrator at the SUNY, Stony Brook Health Sciences Center. On April 28th, friends, family and colleagues gathered at Stony Brook to remember Jim's life through humorous anecdotes and warmhearted memories. On that sad day in North Carolina the world not only lost a fine airman, but an extraordinary, caring physician. All of us at MIAS extend to Jim's family our deepest sympathy. He was a fine and decent man who through a life of helping others, leaves the planet a far better place for his years. We'll miss him.
